Why is the City of Kwinana Ashamed of the Australian Flag?
Take a long, hard look at the City of Kwinana’s official website. Search the headers, scour the menus, and scroll all the way to the bottom. Do you see it?
No, you don’t. Because the Australian National Flag—the symbol that defines our country, our laws, and our shared home—has been effectively erased from the City’s digital identity.
In its place, the Council has installed a massive, bilingual “Acknowledgement of Country” in the footer. While the Council finds the space and the ratepayers’ funds to provide an exhaustive tribute in both Noongar and English, they apparently couldn’t find a single pixel for the flag of the nation that actually provides their funding.
A Minority Priority, A Majority Snub
According to the latest 2021 Census data, approximately 4.2% of the Kwinana population identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Yet, the Council has decided that this small minority deserves 100% of the symbolic real estate on our community’s primary digital platform, while the symbol representing 100% of Australians is nowhere to be found.
Who gave them the mandate to prioritize identity politics over national unity? Was there a community vote? Was there a town hall meeting where residents said, “Please, remove the Australian flag so we can have a virtue-signaling wall of text instead”?
The answer is no. This was a backroom decision made by bureaucrats who seem more interested in “woke” branding than representing the people who pay their salaries.
Spitting on the Memory of the Fallen
The complete absence of the Red, White, and Blue isn’t just a design choice—it’s a betrayal.
The Australian flag is the banner under which our soldiers fought and died. It is the flag that drapes the coffins of our fallen heroes returning from service. It represents the very democracy that allows these Councillors to sit in their comfortable chambers.
By dropping our national flag while elevating a specific cultural narrative, the City of Kwinana is effectively saying that the sacrifices of our veterans are secondary to modern political trends. It is an act of historical amnesia and a direct insult to every veteran living in our City.
Silence is Consent – It’s Time to Act
How long are we going to let our elected officials treat our national identity as an optional extra? This Council is supposed to serve everyone, not just use our rates to push a divisive agenda.
They are counting on you to be too busy to notice. They are counting on your silence.
